PAS 1296, Online Age Checking – Code of Practice

The Age Verification Group of the Digital Policy Alliance has sponsored a Publicly Available Specification (PAS) code of practice standard no. 1296 on Online Age Checking and would like to give members an opportunity to make comments should they desire.

The PAS should not be regarded as a BS, EN or ISO standard. The PAS has been written to assist those businesses that are or expect to be mandated to comply with legal requirements to conduct age checks for online services.

While the PAS does not recommend any specific age checking tools for implementation, it does make recommendations for an online age checking framework that can be used, for example, to check the age of those:

a) buying age-restricted merchandise online [e.g. e-liquids (nicotine), adult materials, dangerous goods];
b) accessing online content (e.g. streaming media, adult content);
c) using online services (e.g. dating services, gaming or gambling websites); and
d) accessing online age-gated material (e.g. education and health).

BSI have now invited review and comment from interested parties on the draft during its ~4 week consultation period, which ends on Thursday 13 October 2016. We therefore encourage members to access the document at and register for free online (new users) or log in.

Please note that only comments submitted electronically through the online Draft Review System by the date given will be accepted.
