GLOBAL DIGITAL MARKET GROUP
MONDAY 26 MARCH 2018
COMPETITION POLICY IN THE AGE OF ‘BIG DATA’
The date for the next meeting of the Global Digital Market Group will take place on Monday 26th March, 1100 to 1230 hours in Central London.
The purpose of the meeting is to follow up on issues that the Group identified as requiring specific actions, including on public service delivery, the move to 5G and ways in which the Group might be able to assist DCMS in achieving its policy objectives, and aspects of competition policy that may require public policy intervention. While the Government has indicated its wish see FTTP/ultrafast broadband rolled out in Britain, a particular problem may exist for local authorities seeking to reduce costs who are locked in to e.g. leased line contracts. On 5G, the Group plans discussions with appropriate DCMS officials to see how we might help with policy objectives. A major issue for the Group is foreseen around competition and algorithmic cartels, with calls for stronger oversight of algorithms used by technology firms, and recommendations that “Government should seek to legislate to shift the balance of liability for illegal content to the social media companies, and away from them being passive ‘platforms’ for illegal content.”
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to register your attendance. Room capacity is limited, and a ‘first come, first served’ policy will therefore be adopted.
This meeting is for DPA members and registered observers only. If you are interested in becoming a member we would welcome your attendance as a taster, but before any further participation, you would then need to join us. More details are available at: https://dpalliance.org.uk/join-us/.
